Empathy Intervention- Miranda Poliafico

Last night, before going out with a group of friends, one of them expressed that she was having some family problems because her grandma was sick. She said that she would be checking her phone frequently to receive updates her condition. When she said this, of course we comforted her, however, I didn’t take the time to truly see how she was feeling. I gave the standard, “Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry, if you need anything, I’m here.”. I felt like a robot saying it because that’s the only thing I’ve been taught to say. I think I meant it? I didn’t put myself in her shoes, instead, I just said the polite words and tried to move on with the night.
