I went to a concert in the bay area this past weekend and while my friends and I were entering the venue an older man who was working the event stopped my friend and insisted he present his ticket even though we had already been allowed in. I immediately “otherised” this man, primarily because he was causing a problem for reasons I did not understand. I was initially annoyed at the man but made an effort to see the situation through his eyes. He was just doing his job, making sure that all attendees had presented their ticket before entering. He did not confront my friend out of malice or with bad intentions, but was looking to preserve his integrity as an employee. This intervention allowed me to gain a new perspective on situations that can arise at any time, especially with interpersonal interactions and conflicts.
